Manage and Repair Your Fiberglass Objects

Fiberglass is one of the hardest material that have been used today in the construction if wide objects ranging from furniture to vehicles. Fiberglass is unbreakable, malleable, tough, versatile and useful than glass because glass is most fragile which can’t be used in every thing. Its versatility and toughness makes it potential for the production of different things including beautiful decorative items.

Although fiberglass is tough, this doesn’t mean it can’t develop dents and blemishes. Fiberglass do develops marks, scratches and dents which can be easily clear out with salve available in market. Durability of fiberglass is reputed but as it ages fiberglass tend to develop physical deformity and cracks. However, fiberglass can be easily maintained to retain its physical appearance and functionality, if we repair this material.

Fiberglass is treated with certain materials which are essential followed by few directions leading to its repair and management. Material and things needed for the repair of fiberglass are: resin roller, gel-coat, polyester resin, taper and grinder, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, de-waxing solvent, razor, fiberglass fabric, fiberglass mat.

Direction for the repair of fiberglass:
  • Repairing of Fiberglass should begin from the inside as this help fiber to get a uniform shape with no lines.
  • Start repairing the fiber by cutting out damaged area using taper hole and grinder. Taper provide fiberglass fabric enough space to fix to for the better fixation.
  • Apply De-waxing solvent on the exterior edges of fiberglass and use some paste wax to coat area near the hole. Application of pate wax reduces the resin production when bonded with outside.
  • Provide a hard surface to patch the hole by keeping wax backer at the bottom of hole tape. Now paint the wax backer with gel-coat of the same colour as of the fiberglass to provide finish look.
  • Cut mat and fiberglass fabric into pieces as in the size of hole and start applying layers of both on fiberglass. Firstly apply 2 layers of mat then fiberglass fabric and after that make this alternative and when four layers are set, stop it immediately.
  • Now the hole filled with fiberglass fabric and mat have to be patched up with polyester resin. Laminating resin can also be used to strong the bond of all the filled material.
  • The laminated area of hole now is sealed with plastic so that resin can work properly with mat and fiberglass fabric. After this methyl ethyl ketone peroxide is used to harden the resin using resin roller.
  • Finally wax backer can be removed and fiberglass is polished accompanied by sanding the repaired area of fiberglass to make it evenly smooth.
