Kitchen color

While designing one’s den, the kitchen is one part that gets neglected more often than not. Since today most families have their members out for work or in schools and colleges for a greater part of the day, many assume that kitchen is the last place in a house where anyone would like to spend their time after a grueling schedule. But consider this, the early morning rush for a quick breakfast or while rustling up a quick dinner at night, where does the family get to bond?...it is the kitchen, no doubt!

One of the most elementary things that should be kept in mind when designing a kitchen is the color scheme. In fact, choosing the right set of colors for one’s kitchen makes for a perfect start in the way of designing or remodeling a kitchen space. Color can be used as an effective tool to adjust the visual effect of the actual size of a room.

While dark and warm colors against multiple contrasts lead to a room being perceived as smaller than its actual size, light and refreshing colors seem to add to a room’s actual dimensions. Therefore, it is important that colors are chosen with utmost care and understanding.

It should also be mentioned here that color should be selected as such it can stand the oil and grime that might accumulate in the process of daily cooking. Right appliances like a proper chimney do absorb the smoke and grime but a proper shade of color also helps to camouflage the smoke stains and hence, preserve the aesthetic quality of one’s kitchen.

The color scheme for a kitchen is not just restricted to the walls but also includes the color of appliances and furniture. As such, it becomes extremely important to co-ordinate the entire interior to create the desired effect. Apart from the color alone, lighting also plays a role in enhancing the overall effect of colors for a kitchen.

Here are some simple pointers to guide you towards choosing that perfect color scheme for your kitchen:
  • First, consider the size of your kitchen and the light source- whether natural or artificial.
  • Then, decide on a tone- warm, neutral or cool. This will serve as the perfect way to start by helping you to build your ideas around the tone. The warm colors like the various shades of yellow, orange or red are instant pep-ups for a dull and monotonous kitchen whereas, the cool shades like blues, greens and purples lend a refreshing feel to your kitchen. The neutral shades include white, brown, black, ivory and beige and can be used to lend a classy touch to a kitchen.
  • Kitchen colorNow select between the monochromatic, analogous and complementary color schemes. While going the monochrome way, it must be remembered that since it calls for playing with one primary color, the shades should be chosen cautiously to avoid either an over-splash of colors or a drab and dull look. The analogous color scheme, on the other hand, makes use of the two or three colors from the same or the related family. For example, an orange-red or a blue-green-violet combination. The complementary color scheme has, by far, the maximum room for experimentation. With the scope of playing with various compatible hues of red, blue and green, for instance, you can definitely let your imagination run wild with this scheme.
  • Would you like to style your kitchen in some particular fashion? If you answer in an affirmative, you are spoilt for choices. From contemporary and modern styles that celebrate minimalism to more ornate and vintage styles and everything that falls between them, kitchen styles come in different variants. However, remember to choose the style that goes hand in hand with your color scheme. For example, a combo of red, white and blue screams ‘Americana’; similarly, steel grey, white and black is all for an edgy modern look.
So, to spruce up your kitchen in the best way, look out for the best color palette that works for you.
