Eating Disorders in Children

Eating disorders have drastic effect on children’s mind that can have long term ill repercussions on their behaviour. This kind of disorder has several types as where some children or teens count on the calories they eat, sometimes eat very less or intensely go over crash diet while others binge on whatever they see means over eat and then vomit.

Eating disorders are generally found in women than in men however pre-teens, teens and youngsters are more prone to be such problems. These disorders should not be neglected because it can more threatening and fatal for your children in long term. There are three types of eating disorders exist: Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating problem. If your child is suffering from any of these take him to expert health care physician to treat this disorder in the due to time.

Anorexia nervosa

Anorexia NervosaAnorexia is a kind of eating disorder more often associated as psychological problem and commonly found in girls more than boys. It is generally found in growing children while even adolescents are found suffering from it as it is a condition in which children avoid eating food and go for crash dieting. Children often go on drive of dieting to loose weight and eat less which might make them loose temper or anxious regarding their body.

An individual restrict itself to eating endlessly often accompanied by several other methods like taking dieting pills, slimming pills in order to reduce body weight. Thus such problem should not be neglected in children as its root may shoot up from mental health and negligence on this could lead to lethal results. However no definite causes has been charted out yet by the doctors around the world yet researchers only say that this problem is more related to psychological disorder rather than physical.

Bulimia nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is just opposite to anorexia yet it is a form of eating disorder where children over eat and purge out through vomiting. A person in this disorder binge on thinking that he is hungry and but then try to get rid of it through vomiting. In this condition people may feel abstracted with the thoughts of weight and body image.

Bulimia can lead to anorexia and depression problems in children in future course if not treated properly with the time. It can also lead to nutritional deficiencies and other complications. The symptoms of bulimia nervosa are as follows:

  • Taking high calorie food secretly
  • Overeating
  • Going bathroom during meal
  • Gaining or loosing body weight
  • Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach ache, nausea
  • Irregular periods
  • Bad breath
  • Depression
Binge-eating disorder

If your child has developed a habit of eating unnecessarily whenever he gets to see a food vendor then there might be a problem with him. Binge eating disorder is affecting today’s children in huge way where they overeat and loosing control their appetite. Though there are many people who have habit of eating much more than usual but then it is not considered to be a syndrome because eating disorder manifests different symptoms which also effect behaviour.

People suffering from binge-eating syndrome show various following symptoms:

  • Frequently eating large amount of food.
  • Unable to control binge habit when food is seen or decide how much to eat.
  • Other conditions like eating more than usual in frequent time, eating till feeling uncomfortable, eating even when not hungry, feeling of anxiety and guilt after overeat.
Binge-eating can lead to numerous complications such as obesity, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, high cholesterol, gallbladder disease and cardiac problem if neglected on the part of children. It should be treated as soon as the symptoms are seen in children in order to avoid further repercussions.
